I've loved books since I could first read - and even before when I was read bedtime stories as a child. After studying for two degrees in literature and philosophy, I got a job as an editor at Hodder & Stoughton. I joined their graduate trainee programme and learned to copy edit, proofread and manage books through the production process. I was producing religious education and social studies schoolbooks, so they were complex illustrated books.
After leaving Hodder, I worked for a small business publisher for six months before landing a job at BBC Books. Essentially, the work was the same, but it all just went a bit faster! The schedules were tight, the budgets were big but carefully managed and the profile of the books was high as they were all TV tie-in titles with short sales periods and hefty expectations for success.
Following a stint as a freelance editor, I was headhunted by Cassell to become a commissioning editor. This was a phenomenal period where I sourced new titles for topic areas including outdoors/walking, sport and fishing. After ditching the fishing area, I started new lists in business and personal development, and took on the cookery list. During that time, the value of the lists I managed doubled as I brought in well-known organisations and authors. and transformed the look and feel of the books we created as a team.
I left Cassell the day it was sold to Octopus and trained as a web designer. I subsequently worked for Sport England, Reuters and banking giant UBS as an intranet manager before returning to publishing after the dot com crash to commission web design books for Pearson. Of course, the dot com crash saw the end of that role as well, so I returned to freelancing and got a job working for New Holland.
At the same time, I trained as a Master Practitioner of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming) and as a life coach.
After leaving London, I set up my first business as a coach, then transitioned into book coaching with Book-Launch Your Business. When I decided to focus on the writing stage, I set up Get It Written, where I can help my clients write and publish books that have all the ingredients needed to make them perform as part of their business.
